Why should you compost in Steamboat Springs and the Yampa Valley?
Composting is an easy and impactful way to reduce waste and enrich our natural environment. By diverting food scraps and yard waste from landfills, you actively combat climate change by reducing potent methane emissions. Unlike landfills where organic waste decays without oxygen and releases harmful gases, composting uses an aerobic process that transforms these materials into a valuable soil amendment known as “black gold.” Compost is known to revitalize soil health, enhancing its structure, water retention, and microbial biodiversity, while also lessening reliance on chemical fertilizers.

Our Compost Process

We provide a sealed bucket that is leak and smell proof for home collection of food waste. Some subscribers keep these buckets in their kitchens, while others use countertop bins for collection and then transfer from their countertop bins to our buckets. To see a list of what goes in the compost bin click here.

Buckets are emptied by subscribers at their convenience into our neighborhood ambassador or community bins. Ambassador bins are located in neighborhoods throughout Steamboat Springs and are available for drop-off on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8am to 5pm. Our community bins are located in public locations and are available 24/7. When you sign up, you will receive a list of all available compost drop off locations.

Food waste is then collected from our bins and taken to our site where it is mixed with wood chips and other green waste and carefully monitored to create a nutrient dense compost, a soil amendment that is ideal for landscaping and gardening. Each of our customers receives a compost dividend of a 5 gallon bucket of compost after being enrolled in the program for least 9 months.
